The Work of Rotary Goes on Regardless of Season

It is a sign, perhaps, of the beguiling charm of summer that so many members were lured away from today’s meeting. Indeed, Malcolm Rust, who was to fill in for the vacationing President Trish, was himself unable to attend and former Club President Pat Martyn (seen at left) found herself in the chair. There was a lot to report. This very afternoon (Monday), there is to be a ground-breaking ceremony for a new Habitat for Humanity house at 40 Alma Street. The Club had donated $500 to this worthy underetaking. Davey Moffatt will attend on the Club’s behalf. Trudy Kanellis reported that the Rotary Food Trailer had made $518.51 at the “Co-opalooza” event in Aylmer on June 17 and about $2640 at the Canada Day event in Pinafore Park (“great”). The Food Trailer next makes an appearance at the Thomas the Tank Engine event this weekend and next. Check the Club’s website (www.rotarystthomas.org) for available shifts.

There’s a change in the date of the Tour of Homes Committee meeting. It will now be July 26 at 7 p.m. at the home of Faye and Ken Ferguson. A Rotary Music Festival meeting will be set for July 18, 19 or 20 to form the 2018 Festival Committee. Let Malcolm know which day you prefer.

As previously announced by email, the Club will no longer be meeting on Mondays at the Wayside. Trudy explained that she and Nick would like to have more time and as Monday is the restaurant’s least busy day, that was the day chosen for closing. A decision will be made by Club members at their July 31 meeting whether to switch to another day at the Wayside or to do something else. If unable to attend, contact President Trish.

HAPPY FINS- Donations of $5 to The Rotary Foundation – Annual Programs Fund – credited to the donor in celebration of something good in our lives. This practice was started in this club in 1985 to raise funds for polio eradication at the suggestion of Darwen Lowe, a member of the club.

Ron Somerville (4) – It’s nice to have everyone back together in fellowship at a club meeting; thanks to everyone for the Paul Harris Fellowship given to him at Merriview on June 26; his wife and he are celebrating their 38th anniversary; for Canada Day.
Adriana Balderas (2) – Thanks to everyone who helped at the Food Trailer on Canada Day; she is a great aunt for the third time.
Gerry Janssen (2) – It was a “refreshing” change to be at Merriview for the Changeover meeting; to wish Trish Shouldice all the best as she begins her Presidential year.
Jennifer Babcock (2) – She and her husband celebrated their 12th anniversary on July 2; she was surprised, but nonetheless delighted to find that her child, enrolled in summer day camp, enjoyed being in the pool.
Pat Martyn (2) – An enjoyable Canada Day weekend with her extended family at Wasaga Beach; she is now glad to be home.
Trudy Kanellis (3) – For winning the 50/50; it was nice to be at Merriview for the Changeover meeting; thanks to everyone who helped at the Food Trailer at “Co-opalooza” and on Canada Day.
