Rotary Club of St. Thomas Meeting
Wednesday, August 8, 2018

Special guests at this meeting were DG Jim Schlatman and his wife, Audrey, who were attending our club for the District Governor’s official visit.

Dates to Remember:

August 15 – meeting at the Elgin County Heritage Centre with lunch afterwards at Merrifield.

September 19 – Rotary Showcase at the Knights of Columbus Hall - Invite friends and acquaintances to attend and introduce them to Rotary

ADG Area10 Nancy Lovelock introduced DG Jim from the RC of Hanover.  Jim was in sales most of his life and was a kitchen and bath designer for Hanover Kitchen and Bath for 25 years.  His wife, Audrey, has been an active supporter of Rotary and its many projects.

“Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.”

This is the vision of RI President Barry Rassin and the message the DG Jim brought to the club.vThe three priorities this year are Membership, Public Image, and The Rotary Foundation.

Membership:  The Drive for Five  -  DG Jim challenges every club to induct 5 new members with September 10 – October 30 designated as a period of extreme effort in that regard.  Success will be celebrated at the club level, the area level with awards for the best numbers, and at the district level with recognition at the District Conference.

“Get Your Ask in Gear” by asking for new initiative and areas of interest from new members.

PR and Social Media:  Clubs should ask themselves what their “curb appeal” is and what can be done through social media, Facebook and Twitter, to show case their club.  Each club should develop a Social Media Team, not one individual but a team of people, to enhance their presence on social media.

The Rotary Foundation:  Every club is expected to maintain its monetary support of The Foundation.  In the past 100 years over $3 billion has been donated to The Foundation for use in projects around the world.  99.99% of all polio has been eradicated but success depends on maintaining complete eradication for three years.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is continuing its 2 for 1 matching funds again this year.  Clubs are asked to become an “Eradicator Club” – each member must contribute $40US to Polio Plus and events to raise awareness and to raise funds are encouraged.

This year’s theme is “Be the Inspiration”.  The logo has three components: the wave representing the power of the ocean (Rotary); the sail reaching all corners of the earth; the heart of our endeavours (Rotary).

Pres. Gerry presented DG Jim with a Rotary Bear. He then presented new members Mary Morin and Barbara Warnock with their club badges.  Pres. Gerry also won the 50/50 draw.

Fine Master Adrianna quizzed the members on an article in the recent Rotarian about the ping-pong project which began in Toronto and has now expanded into Windsor.
