Our Local Legal Clinic
Stewart Shouldice presents the Harris bear on behalf of Ken Brooks from the Elgin Oxford Legal Clinic
Our local Legal Clinic
The clinic is staffed by an Indigenous Justice Coordinator, lawyers, and legal workers.  So free legal services are provided to the residents of Chippewa of the Thames First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames and Munsee-Delaware Nation in addition to the residents of Elgin and Oxford.  The clinic’s story was told by Kenneth J. Brooks, Executive Director of Elgin-Oxford Legal Clinic.
Funded by Legal Aid Ontario it provides law services to low-income residents. Many are renters faced with fewer rental properties and rents beyond their ability to pay.  So there are many landlord and tenant issues.  Differences between the way the province and the federal government define “disability” often leads to people needing assistance to navigate the systems.  Negotiating Employment Insurance, workplace standards and wrongful dismissal are other areas where help is needed. With a history of mistrust between indigenous peoples and the government, the services of the Justice Cordinator are needed. Services are offered from the main office located at 98 Centre Street and their satellite offices located in Woodstock, Tillsonburg, Aylmer, Ingersoll, and West Lorne.

City Hall – Nancy reported the City is willing to develop space on their website for service clubs helping people to make contact.
International Water Day –Nancy issued a challenge to club members to mark World Water Day, Thursday 22 Mar by trying to reduce our use of water to 150 litres.  Average Canadian usage is 329 litres and Europeans use about ½ that amount.  The people of Cape Town, South Africa are attempting to reduce their consumption to 50 litres a day.  Club members accepting the challenge are invited to donate $5 for Rotary water projects.
