Suicide Prevention.  Speaker Kyle Rolph on 17 Oct 2018
A practical presentation on a heavy topic!

Most suicides are preventable, Kyle said.  The will to live is strong in most people, even up to close to the end.  He works with students, most of the time, but wants to raise awareness locally and to make ours a safer community for everyone.

He encourages people to make suicide a topic of conversation in many different situations so as to lessen the stigma attached to it.  He wants to alert the general public to the things being said or the non-verbal clues that are given by those thinking about suicide.  Then he trains groups locally in suicide intervention skills and these people can be called on when help is needed.  Currently he is training Victim Services Elgin but expects in November to offer the training to others in the community.

He promotes SAFE TALK.
Talk. Encourage them trust you. Reflect the clues you have picked up from listening to them. Becoming more withdrawn; not caring about things they did care about; they may display panic or be unrealistically calm
Ask if they have ever thought of suicide. Use the word. Use the clues you have picked up by listening and watching to then ask the question.
Listen to their relief that the topic is on the table. If they persist in denial reflect what they said and what you noticed. If they are not thinking about suicide nothing you say is likely to drive them in that direction.
Keep safe. Tell the person, This is important. We need some help and make a call. Kyle 519-633-6538;
