15Jan2020 Library Programs and Polio Plus Award
President Gerry welcomed guests, his wife Catherine, Maggie Horn and Doug Burnard and today’s speakers.
Gerry reminded members that all are welcome at Chamber After 5 and tonight it’s at Back Alley.
Tomorrow Gerry is going to a fact finding meeting for Airfest 2020 to see if we would like to volunteer at it.  If you are interested in attending tomorrow Jan 16 let Gerry know.
Tonight at the memorial arena from 6 to 8 is an open house to learn more about the City Parks and Rec current and future programs.  All welcome.
We are officially on list to work at Jackpot Bingo and it will probably take a couple of years before we are called.

Doug Burnard gave a presentation on the history of Polio Plus and presented us with a certificate of appreciation for monies we have given.  It was interesting to note that last year from the 50 million dollars collected it was turned into 300 million due to matching grants.

Deana Vanzanten and Carolyn Little  (who work at Library) spoke of Elgin Children’s Network and their new literacy project.
The first project was called Get Set Learn where parents are encouraged to help children with literacy.  It was held at the Northside Neighbourhood Hub, very successful.
They created Literacy on the Go Cards, helping with literacy doing everyday chores.  They are distributed many ways through the community.
They also help ECE workers with their literacy in a 7 week course.
The 2020 project is called Celebration of Literacy.  The 30 before and after school programs are invited to participate by making a drawing of what literacy means to them (reading, art, math, digital, etc,), submit a photo of same and they will qualify to receive a Literacy Kit for their program.  The program starts from Jan 27 to March Break.  They are asking for approximately $1,000 in addition to the $2,000 they’ve already received.
