20Oct21 Darwen and Marie Lowe - Polio
President Barbara opened by striking the bell with a spoon; she is looking for the gavel. She acknowledged that we are on traditional aboriginal territory. (Editors note: taken from internet, “St. Thomas – the traditional territory of the Anishnabek, Haudenosaunee, Ojibway/Chippewa peoples. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties.”)
 
10 members and 3 guests sang O Canada, toasted Queen and country and RI, and recited the 4-Way Test.

Bill Horn noted that Darwen started Happy Finns in 1988 to raise funds for the polio work of Rotary International.
 
Marie Lowe won the 50/50 draw.
Happy Finns:
Bill – cousins had 67th anniversary and two cousins had birthdays, Thanked Darwen for his presentation
Trudy – Thanked Darwen, was in Mexico for vacation, has had several birthday celebrations for her recent birthday, She has Interactor Turkey Raffle tickets $2 for one, $5 for 3
Marie Lowe – Grateful to be invited to meet with Rotarians; Daughter was home for visit to help she and Darwen get relocated.
Nancy – Darwen’s presentation, daughter Michelle visited at Thanksgiving
Catharine – Thanked Darwen, Son a medic in military worked many hours overtime to assist with COVID battle and is taking a mandatory break, Gerry’s birthday, Thanksgiving
Trish – Thanked Darwen and Marie, today is the 70th anniversary of Kathy and Ed Willson’s wedding
Barbara – Thanked Darwen, family together for Thanksgiving, son a CN Conductor after passing training, Much older brother’s birthday
Pat – Thanked Darwen and Marie, celebrated many birthdays: 15 year old grandson’s Oct 18, her own, Oct 19 and her son in law’s today.
Ron – Thanked Darwen and Marie, sister’s daughter in induced coma following major surgery, Grandson returned from BC (on non-stop trip) and got vaccinated so could be with family, Pt Stanley theatre production was great but bad news for us, future productions are sold out.
 
Announcements:
Gerry announced that District tulip sales from the club included 60 boxes.  All have been distributed.  There are 8 boxes remaining if members wish to buy or sell these. Net proceeds to Polio Plus from our club will be approximately $700- $800. President Barbara commended the club for selling 60/500 boxes available in the District.
 
2 prizes left from Tour were redrawn as original winners declined due to living out of our region.
Prizes went to Regina Martyn (golf) and Linda Alton (Auto Guys coupon).
 
A total of 186 excellent photos were submitted as part of the Discovery Tour. The winners were selected based on artistic merit and relevance to the Discovery Tour.

This week: meet at City Hall Friday 22Oct21at 11 am for Flag raising in honour of Polio Day (Oct 24th).
Next week: 27Oct21 4pm, meet at Hospice Elgin future build site (Waterworks Park entrance) for photo op with RCRC and our contribution to build. From there we will go to Wayside for dinner from the menu. Trudy needs to know names of those attending to arrange staffing. A Paul Harris Fellow will be awarded.

A Board meeting will be held Nov 10, 2021 following our regular meeting.  This is a budget meeting only and is available by Zoom as well as in-person.
 
Pat Martyn announced that over $1100 was donated from our past “Walk for Water” events to “Water First”, headquartered in Creemore.  This initiative trains Indigenous Youth to manage water facilities that provide clean water to First Nations communities. Check the website at:
